Growing own sprouts
Rapunzel offers different germination equipment for home-growing your own sprouts:
glass germinators, keimli sprouters, mini greenhouses and germination trays. The choice of germination device depends on the type of seed you want to sprout and on the desired harvest amount.
In a glass germinator and in a keimli sprouter only seeds of one variety can be sprouted. The glass germinator is not suited for cress and arugula because these seeds are mucus-forming seeds.
In a mini greenhouse or a germination tray you may start with up to three different sprouting seeds at a time. The vaulted lid of the germination tray is ideal for the sprouting of wheatgrass.
Most seeds can be sprouted in either of the four different germination devices.
The glass germinator for beginners
Glass Germinator bioSnacky
The glass germinator is the most common and the simplest germination device.
The glass germinator is a good choice especially for sprouting seeds such as alfalfa, mung beans and seed mixtures. The jar guarantees quick handling of seeds that need no fixed sprouting bottom.
You can grow most sprouts in the glass jar.
Do not sprout mucigenous sprouts such as arugula and cress in a glass germinator.
Growing your own sprouts
How to grow sprouts in a glass germinator:
1. Preparation
For the sprouting of seeds you need a bright place without direct sunlight. Rinse the glass germinator with cold water.
2. Rinsing
Put the seeds into the jar. Close jar with sieve lid and fill with cold water. Strain off water immediately.
3. Sowing
Fill jar with cold water until all seeds are immersed. Shake jar in order to disperse seeds. Soak seeds in water for the time described on the package. Afterwards, strain off water and wet seeds as described on the package.
4. Irrigation
Fill fresh water through the sieve lid and strain off water immediately. Place the jar with the sieve lid slanted downward onto a plate in order to catch the remaining water from the glass germinator.
5. Harvesting
Harvest crispy, fresh sprouts after 2-6 days.
Wash sprouts prior to consumption. The sprouts can be refrigerated for several days.
6. Cleaning
Thorougly clean all germinator parts (glass germinator, sieve, watering can, spoon,...). Clean with cider vinegar and a soft brush. The glass germinator is dishwasher-safe. Rinse with cold water and dry.
Growing sprouts in the Keimli sprouter
Mini Germinator bioSnacky
All sprouting seeds for the single household:
The Keimli sprouter can be used with all bioSnacky sprouting seeds. Also mucigenous seeds such as cress or arugula or green seeds such as cress and wheatgrass can be cultivated in a Keimli sprouter. Please observe that compared to a mini greenhaouse and a germination tray only one type of seed can be cultivated at a time in the Keimli sprouter.
Cultivating sprouts in a Keimli sprouter:
1. Preparation
Rinse drip dish and sieve with cold water. Put Keimli sprouter in a bright, warm place. Avoid direct sunlight.
2. Rinsing
Rinse seeds thoroughly in running water prior to sowing.
3. Sowing
Fill 1 cm of water in bottom tray. Distribute seeds on the sieve in a thin layer.
4. Irrigation
Immerse sieve 2-3 times into fresh water until seeds are well irrigated. Put sieve onto nubs and make sure that seeds are not immersed in water! Only about 5 mm of water should remain in the bottom tray in order to ensure an optimal water balance.
5. Harvesting
Harvest crispy sprouts and seedlings after 3–7 days. Rinse sprouts prior to eating. The sprouts can be refrigerated for several days.
6. Cleaning
Thorougly clean all sprouter parts (Keimli, sieve, watering can, spoon,...). Clean with cider vinegar and a soft brush. The Keimli sprouter is dishwasher-safe. Rinse with cold water and dry.
More variety with the mini greenhouse and the germination tray
Germinator bioSnacky
Mini Greenhouse bioSnacky
The classic mini greenhouse for sprouts aficionados has 3 levels for the cultivation of different sprout varieties.
This sprouting device has several levels – ensuring the simultaneous cultivation of 3 different seed varieties. This sprouter works according to the greenhouse principle. That's why it has a lid. The vaulted lid is ideal for the cultivation of wheatgrass.
With a mini greenhouse sprouter and a germination tray you always have the choice if you want to cultivate green herbs (e.g. cress) or sprouts - you can do both at the same time.
How to cultivate sprouts in a mini greenhouse:
1. Preparation
Rinse device with cold water. Put mini greenhouse in a level, bright and warm place. Avoid direct sunlight. Make sure that the red syphon knobs sit tightly on the drain tubes.
2. Rinsing
Rinse seeds thoroughly in running water prior to sowing.
3. Sowing
Distribute seeds in germination tray. Stack trays on top of each other in such a way that the red syphon knobs are not above one another, but offset to each other.
4. Irrigation
Pour water into top tray until the syphon knob is fully covered with water (at least 0.5 l) and the water starts to automatically irrigate the bottom trays! A small amount of water remains in each tray in order to produce the humidity that the seeds need for their growth. Empty the drip dish when the water has drained and replenish with some fresh water in order to keep the bottom covered with water.
5. Harvesting
Harvest crispy, fresh sprouts after 2-10 days. Rinse sprouts prior to eating. The sprouts can be refrigerated for several days.
6. Cleaning
Thorougly clean all sprouter parts (mini greenhouse, syphon knobs, sieve, watering can, spoon,...). Clean with cider vinegar and a soft brush. The mini greenhouse is dishwasher-safe. Rinse with cold water and dry.
How to grow sprouts in a germination tray:
1. Preparation
Rinse germination tray with cold water. Put device in a bright, warm place. Avoid direct sunlight.
2. Rinsing
Put seeds in a sieve and rinse thoroughly in running water prior to sowing. Depending on variety, soak sprouting seeds (refer to package instructions).
3. Sowing
Distribute seeds in a thin layer in the germination tray. With small seeds, first put a wetted fleece paper into the tray.
4. Irrigation
Put the entire sprouting device in running cold water and rinse thoroughly. Drain drip dish immediately after irrigation and replenish with some fresh water until the bottom is covered.
5. Harvesting
Harvest crispy, fresh sprouts and seedlings after 2-10 days.
Wash prior to consumption. The sprouts can be refrigerated for several days.
6. Cleaning
Thorougly clean all sprouter parts (germination tray, sieve, watering can, spoon,...). Clean with cider vinegar and a soft brush. The germination tray is dishwasher-safe. Rinse with cold water and dry.
