The Rapunzel coffee facility produces the finest coffees for you to enjoy
We love coffee! Which is why we roast our organic fair-trade HERO COFFEE ourselves at our coffee roasting facility in Legau. There are around eight hundred aromas in a single coffee bean. These can only be unlocked by roasting, and it is this that gives the coffee its individual character. Experienced master roasters at the Rapunzel coffee roasting facility in the Allgäu pay special attention to the high quality of every raw coffee, with each type receiving its own individual roasting time and temperature.
Gentle and sustainable roasting
Roasting coffee beans takes time and requires a sensitive touch, which is why the roasting process is slow and gentle. It is done at low temperatures, in small quantities in a traditional drum roaster. This process enables the coffee to develop its full character, which is why good coffee is an absolute joy to drink.
By the way:
the waste heat from the coffee roaster is used to heat the entire visitors centre! This energy efficiency measure not only enables Rapunzel to save resources, but it also helps protect the environment.
Experience HERO COFFEE live
Visitors to the Rapunzel World, our visitors centre in Legau in the Allgäu, can experience first-hand how we make our HERO COFFEE. Only a glass partition separates guests from the actual organic-certified coffee roasting facility, so visitors have a chance to observe the roasting process up close.
Visitors can also see the coffee plants growing in the Tropical House, before enjoying a cup of coffee in our bistro. You can also discover a wealth of interesting information about our coffee growers in a separate exhibition as well as in our coffee workshops and tasting events. We look forward to seeing you!
From the plant to your cup
The coffee growers in the countries from which Rapunzel HERO COFFEE originates work to ensure maximum organic quality.
The fine coffee beans come directly to us in the Allgäu from nine countries – Guatemala, Peru, Honduras, Mexico, Colombia, Tanzania, Kenya, Laos and Indonesia.
Once they have reached the Rapunzel coffee roasting facility in the Allgäu , the beans are first subjected to a rigorous visual inspection, before they enter the roaster to commence the refining process.
This process is slow and not too hot. The raw coffee is roasted in small quantities, gently and gradually, in a traditional drum roaster. The master roaster uses his experience to decide how long the beans will need to develop their ideal aroma, and what temperature is required. Longer roasting times serve to break down the unwanted acids, while the desired bitter components and fine aromas are able to develop.
By the way:
You can actually hear when the beans change colour from pale to medium-brown and the roasting aroma starts to develop. Specialists refer to this moment as the ‘first crack’.
The roasted coffee beans are very light because the roasting process opens up the beans’ pores, allowing the residual water to escape. The sensitive beans are sucked up by an air stream and transported to a storage container. From here they are taken in small quantities by hand in small carriages to the grinder or packaging machine.
A decisive factor is the degree of grinding. It is very important that the coffee does not become hot. For this reason, the grinding discs are kept cool.
Finally, the HERO COFFEE receives its attractive packaging and awaits delivery to an organic food store.

And where does the name HERO COFFEE come from? It is given this name because it comes from true heroes. The coffee farmers work to maintain a flourishing biodiversity in their cultivation regions. Growing coffee in mixed crops and under shady trees not only maintains stable and species-rich ecosystems but also ensures that the coffee beans are of excellent quality.
It is only HAND IN HAND with the farmers - our local heroes - that we are able to ensure the high quality of our organic coffee. HAND IN HAND is a unique promise of excellent organic quality and fair trade.
A further highlight of the Rapunzel World is ‘Coffee & More’, the Rapunzel coffee store
You will find the Hero Coffee produced in the Rapunzel roasting facility right next door in the ‘Coffee & More’ coffee store. You can gain a quick overview of the entire Rapunzel coffee range while taking the opportunity to taste some freshly ground coffee for yourself and discovering everything you need for making the perfect coffee at home. In addition to Chemex carafes, stylish cups, and special water kettles, visitors will also find a wide selection of Rapunzel fan articles, from our muesli tins to fair Bio clothing. The new coffee store is an ideal complement to the existing coffee exhibition and the popular coffee workshop in the Rapunzel World.
